First Annual Herring Run Festival: Fun, Music and More

In what is expected to be a great way to drum up tourism, the Friends of the Herring Run group will be conducting the first annual herring run in Middleboro, Massachusetts, this week. The group is comprised of individuals who are committed to showcasing the location as an ideal spot for a leisurely, fun-filled visit. The group is also hoping to increase awareness about the herring run event and make it an annual destination for nature lovers.

The Herring Run event

As one of Middleboro’s very significant natural resources, the Herring Run is quite well known in these parts. However, to draw and hold the attention of visitors from other parts of the country, the local businesses, residents and artisans are all gearing up to make the event a memorable affair. The Herring Run event spotlights the return of the herring from the ocean for the summer. A significant decline in herring numbers in the past had dampened the enthusiasm for the annual event here, but in 2013 the numbers were hearteningly high, leading the locals and authorities to have high expectations this year as well.

The Herring Run is getting some serious publicity here with the locals really getting into the swing of things. The run is supported by a grant from the cultural council of Middleboro, which is backed by the state agency, Mass Cultural Council. Visitors can enjoy the colorful events and the many activities planned by the local businesses between the 11th and 13th of April when the herring are expected to run up the Nemasket River.

Get set for food, fun and festivity

If you are going to be in Middleboro during this time, make sure to get a taste of the delicious food and drinks that are going to be on display. Several renowned local eateries including the Hideaway Restaurant ( known for its clam chowder), the Great Cape Baking (with yummy apple cider doughnuts), Beachouse Baking (with nut-free, gluten-free and vegan goodies) and many more will be presenting their best to visitors at the event.

If you love history, the Civil War enactments are sure to keep you riveted. For those who like to jive with the music, a concert has been organized at the Town Hall. Young musicians from the locality will start off the musical extravaganza. This will be followed by some bluegrass style jazz by Denniz Lewoczko and country music performer Brianna Grace. Expect to be enthralled by the magical illusions of the Great Bondini too at this event.

A comprehensive outline of events, participants et al is posted on the Friends of the Middleboro Herring Run social media pages and this is where you can get a good idea of what to expect when you get down here.
